Diagnosis

DSM-5 criteria

 

AUD (based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5)) is diagnosed based on patients meeting the criteria of “clinically significant impairment or distress” due to their alcohol use, in addition to thresholds met on the 11 diagnostic criteria found below.

The severity of AUD can help determine the treatment plan.

 

MILD: 2-3 symptoms

 

MODERATE: 4-5 symptoms

 

SEVERE: 6 or more symptoms
